With this project I set out to learn about industrial design in the professional world. By working with an outside partner and multiple mentors I design Grocery Cover. Grocery Cover is apart of a larger system called HONDA Grocery Assist of which I designed along side 3 classmates, Jacqueline Brandon, Grace Gerber, and Korene Embrack. They designed the other 3 components of HONDA Grocery Assist.
During the Research phase I kept detailed notes to keep track of the process. This organization helped me keep track of what needed done.
I wrote down what I needed to know and what I already knew to help better understand the brief, problem, and research.
Broad overview of timeline for project.
To better understand the prompt and brief I wrote down everything I already knew about grocery shopping
Summary of a typical Grocery Shopping Journey.
This is how I started thinking about the questions I needed to ask in my survey.
Below is how I made sense of the data I collected from surveys and a journal activity.
This is everything I needed to complete before the end of the project and was put into my Gantt Chart/Project Plan.
Grocery Cover is a component of a larger system designed by 4 industrial design students at The Ohio State University. Jacqueline Brandon, Grace Gerber, and Korene Embrack. This system addresses user needs for grocery shopping in the trunk of HONDA vehicles.
Through my research I found that the design needed to be integrated into the trunk of the vehicle. Trunks are used for so much more than grocery shopping, and therefore the design needs to be unobtrusive and not take up any extra space in the cargo area of the vehicle. Temperature control would help address how transportation of perishable items is leading to food waste.
The design needs to be convenient. If it isn't, users won't remember to use it.

Testing different materials while building the appearance model.
This 3D print was too small and fragile. It informed the decisions I made in the future about the form of this design. I made the handle more robust and the bracket thicker as well.
The route we drove for our testing. Along with the groceries we bought to test our prototypes. We used our prototypes in the back of a HONDA Pilot to see how it affected the shifting and damage of grocery items during transportation of this route drawn above.
I used the Passport trunk to display my appearance model.
We presented our final concepts to our partner at HODNA, Kal Whalen. Also pictured are professors Sebastien Proulx (left) and William Nickley (right).
